WTH is wrong with my knee??

Since yesterday morning I have barely been able to walk. It feels like someone whacked my right kneecap with a blunt instrument. I have been sucking down ibuprofen every four hours for two straight days. This morning it felt fine as I dressed for my walk, but two blocks into it I was limping along. I headed home, in pain (physical and emotional -- I love my early a.m. walks!)

I remember in seventh grade having something like this. It was so bad I had to stay home from school. As I recall it resolved on its own. Over the years I have had twinges when the weather gets damp, or when I exercise too much, but nothing this bad. Many members of my family have had "bad knees" of some type or other, so I wonder if this was just inevitable.

I do not want to get cut open again.

THis is your nurse aunt!
This sounds just like how Brad's knee acted since highschool also. Then a few years ago he was in Paris and had the same experience walking! He called me from there to schedule an appointment with an orthopaedic surgeon! when he got home he had arthroscopic surgery to repair his torn meniscus and has been great ever since.
It seems that when there is a little tear in the meniscus, which is like a disc inside the knee joint--picture a round, flat make-up sponge. So with a small tear it can fold back on itself and cause pain. Then it may adjust itself around and stop hurting for some time. Then something ordinary that you do, like picking up toys from the floor or kneeling down to play with the kids can cause the torn section to fold back on itself again and cause horrible pain.
They can, through the arthroscope, just cut out the damaged part of the meniscus and it will go on protecting your knee joint just fine. It is day surgery, but does require a couple of weeks of recuperation with elevating your leg and ice periodically. Most people have it on Friday and return to work on Monday.
So, my free advise is make a doctor's appointment with an orthopaedic surgeon and get it fixed before it goes out in a more inconvenient place...like on vacation or something.
Love you and wish I were closer, but you can call any time.
